When somebody writes/makes something for the media they could be untitled to 'royalty payments'. These are payments where the person who wrote for example a show would be a paid a certain amount of money by the company airing the show every time the show is shown - even if it was made many years ago - the writer is entitled to royalty payments and if he/she wasn't paid the company that is airing the show can be taken to court.
But not every writer is entitled to Royalty Payments. It all depends on the contract they signed before making the show. Often when they are entitled, its often when they have hired the help of a good and professional agent to make sure they get the best contract and money possible.
Royalty Payments are not just for the televison and film industry. They are also used in Branding, Art, Advertising and Music production. For example when you hear a song on the radio the artist who made it will be paid a certain amount and for art when people copy famous pictures or photographs the artist has to be paid.
In my opinion I think Royalty Payments is a good thing for everyone as the writer/artist gets a good wage therefore encouraged to create more and production companies and the media can make more money easier. Also because its cheaper for the production companies to air 'old' shows all ages can enjoy classic shows.
But on the other hand it makes it harder for new writers and artist to be noticed and given a chance as they would be more over shadowed by the previous writers and artists.
In conclusion I think Royalty payments are a possitve thing for everyone involved in the production not so good for new comers.
